Unless politicians stop politicising terrorism, nothing would change

IIPM MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE
The bomb blast in Darjeeling Mail this month in New Jalpaiguri is another chilling reminder of the sad fact that the menace of terrorism continues to grow unabated across the length and breadth of the country. The network of Pakistan sponsored terrorist groups and sleeper cells is well established in various parts of the country. In addition, the Naxal problem in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh is turning into a time bomb, threatening the very future of democracy and India’s economic well being. Yet, our politicians fail to meet the challenge head on. Instead, every time a terrorist bomb explodes, some or the other political party tries to draw political mileage out of it.

Not long ago, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh had given a clean chit to Student’s Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) to win Muslim support. We know it well that the ISI is using Bangladesh to spread extremist activities in the North- East. Yet the UPA government has been soft on Bangladesh. The same goes for the communists, who carry out protest marches against the blasts but when it comes to bringing the Maoist to book, they turn a blind eye.
