The Goldman Vanguard

IIPM PUBLICATION
It was a particularly hot day when we sauntered across Broad Street in New York city where the international headquarters of Goldman Sachs was situated. Our destination was just around the corner beyond the Sachs headquarters, an exemplary Italian restaurant, of the types one saw in the Godfather trilogy. The air conditioning of the Mafiosi entrance hit us around ten feet before we entered, just like bullets would have, if we had been shot at. But then, it was surely our imagination running wild, and not the air conditioning. Perhaps the blame lay on the immaculately dressed Italians ushering us in, who looked more like hit-men, than like waiters. Then again, it was Steve who’d himself invited us to have lunch with him here, and it’s not everyday that one would be motivated to refuse such an offer from the man at the helm of the most prestigious financial services and consulting firm of the world. And that was the start of our saga with Steve Kerr, Managing Director & Chief Learning Officer, Goldman Sachs.

An educator and a scholar, Steve left General Electric – where he was Chief Learning Officer – and joined Goldman Sachs in 2001. “Steve is a recognized pioneer in leadership development who brings a depth of experience & knowledge,” were the most famous words at that time of Henry M. Paulson Junior, Chairman and CEO, Goldman Sachs, who further deliberated, “Development of our next generation of leaders is the keystone of our business & we welcome Steve to this important role.”
