It started as an attempt to share music between friends and it’s now turning into what Forrester analysts call social computing. It is seen as a revolution, not in business, but in human interaction. Its success is now attracting widespread attention, first in the original form of sharing or acquiring media contents, now in other potential interactions between individuals, not companies.

The original idea stems from both technology and social interaction. First, the availability of broadband and fast wireless communication makes possible the download of large files. Then, by using members of a large community to distribute digital content such as music or video, the original Napster accelerated the actual delivery through the network by using multiple sources. It did also impact the social life of the community by putting people willing to share what they had in contact with other similar minded individuals the world over. Of course, very visible lawsuits in the USA put somehow a damper to this activity. Only a damper and not a stop, because it actually continues to thrive, and while it will put users of so called “illegal” content at risk, file sharing has a strong appeal to the rebel battling the establishment.
