BRAND : MotoRazr2 - Sharper than ever

When IIPM comes to education, never compromise

BRAND : MotoRazr2
AGENCY: O&M
BASELINE : Sharper than ever

DESCRIPTION: A BRAND : MotoRazr2 - Sharper than everguy gets out of the metro, and unknowingly his MotoRazr 2 slits a girl’s dress. The girl takes out her MotoRazr 2 and slits his jacket into two halves. The battle between the two begins. She splits both his sleeves off his shoulders and both of them end up kick fighting. Then, the guy holds the girl down and clicks her picture using his MotoRazr 2; she’s angry, but as the train is ready to leave, she jumps into it. In all the commotion she forgets her Razr 2 but the guy throws it at her; but it gets stuck on the wall.

4Ps TAKE: This time Motorola says hello with a really sharp edge – and how! The power idea is to launch the new MotoRazr 2 in the Indian market (as well as globally), and the USP is the sharpness of the product: razor sharp technology and razor sharp looks. The storyboard is interesting and depicts the handset’s “edge” through the battle of the sexes: with fight sequence between the hot chick and the handsome guy is as stylish as hell, much like the product itself! Aimed at the upwardly mobile, this one is sheer chic and a style statement. Say Hello Moto with style now!

BRAND : Nike - Where’s the next Ronaldinho?

IIPM - Admission Procedure

BRAND :
Nike
BASELINE : Where’s the next Ronaldinho?

DESCRIPTION: The BRAND : Nike - Where’s the next Ronaldinho?ad begins with a boy thinking of becoming a professional football player while brushing his teeth and Ronaldinho’s image in his bathroom mirror. Next we see Ronaldinho playing with his football inside the train, on the busy road, as he says, “I always have the football with me, it’s my best friend.” People are almost fed up of Ronaldinho’s football mania – but he doesn’t care The ad ends with a caption asking, ‘Where’s the next Ronaldinho?’

4Ps TAKE: Last time it was gully cricket and this time it is soccer doing the trick for Nike. Despite the language restriction (which is resolved through the English sub-titles), this ad scores on every account. The visual grabs all eyeballs especially those soccer crazy viewers and Ronaldinho fans, as the Brazilian player steals the show. The USP? Nike’s sports gear that makes it possible for one to practise to attain the kind of perfection that Ronaldinho has today. The reward to the prospect is of course the great soccer star: do you have it in you to be the next Ronaldinho? As far as Nike is concerned, it’s done it – yet again!

Wrigley’s Orbit - Chewing Orbit regularly helps keep your teeth healthy

IIPM, ADMISSIONS FOR NEW DELHI & GURGAON BRANCHES

CATEGORY : Online
BRAND : Wrigley’s Orbit
HEADLINE : Chewing Orbit regularly helps keep your teeth healthy
BASELINE : Sugar free chewing gum

4Ps TAKE : JustWrigley’s Orbit - Chewing Orbit regularly helps keep your teeth healthy days ago, Ram Gopal Verma came out with a pathetic copy of Sholay titled Aag. Wrigley’s too have used Sholay as a backdrop to promote its Orbit brand. But unlike RGV, they have been successful not only in tickling the funny bone through this online ad, but also in conveying their message to the audience. The idea is to communicate (of course dubbed in Thakur, Gabbar’s voice) the USP that Chewing Orbit regularly helps keep your teeth healthy. The visual is animated & engrossing, especially the fight sequence between Thakur & Gabbar. Shall we say, ‘An Orbit a day keeps the dakus away’!

ASIAN PAINTS

IIPM, ADMISSIONS FOR NEW DELHI & GURGAON BRANCHES

Its commercials still bring smiles to millions in India. But the energy has visibly faded!

RememberColours at Asian Paints don’t appear as bright as they were. Really! ‘Gattu’ – the mischievous little boy with a paint brush, mischievous and willing to paint your whole neighbourhood in bright shades? He’s been replaced by Asian Paints which has undergone a serious makeover, but their commercials have remained – just the way Gattu was – full of life and mischievous! With a firm focus on innovative offerings, employing supreme quality schemes and possessing a wide distribution network, Asian Paints has truly become a brand to reckon with! Then came along the ‘Chotte Nawab’ commercial which once again brought to surface the perky character hidden behind the brand. Ads, be it ‘Waah Sunil babu’ or ‘Har rang kuch kehta hai’, have worked their magic with the timetested formula of subtle humour juxtaposed with an innocent appeal. Speaking on its branding efforts, Abhijit Avasthi, Group Creative Director at O&M states, “While the communication ‘Har ghar kuch kehta hai’ is emotional, the work on Apex Exteriors is always product centric and humorous in the manner of ‘Wah Sunil babu badhiya hai’ and ‘Chote Nawab”. But somewhere with time, the brand hasn’t lived upto the mark when it came to communiqué, no more exuding the same energy and expectedly fell 18 spots to the 61st rank for 2007. But then again, as even Gattu would agree, we are talking of a six decade-old grizzled veteran who for sure knows how to fight (paint?)

PARKER

IIPM, GURGAON

By avoiding the mass market, the brand has attained a ‘premium’ image, but with trade-offs

ImaginePARKER you come across an executive using a Parker pen. What would your first impression be? “He’s not using an ordinary pen!” Right? Sure, yes; and that’s precisely what brand Parker has attained over the past few years – and likewise, during the past year! From the flagship Duo fold-line, Sonnet, Rialto and to the more affordable Latitude series, the brand ‘Parker’ has forever held an image associated with pens that give its owner a ‘certain’ status and offer consistently high quality and value. An innovator in true sense when it comes to stationery – whether its ‘Lucky curve’ or ‘Qunik’, the first pen with a metal cap or first pen that filled itself through capillary action, et al – the brand has been at the forefront of design and usability. For years now, Parker has stuck to its strategy of targeting consumers who do not fall in the mass market category. To be honest, this strategy has paid-off to build its image, but at the same time, little could it have imagined that its strength would become its weakness a years later. During 2006, its parent company, Luxor Writing Instruments Pvt. Ltd. Announced a foray into ‘stationery retail outlets’ thus giving hope to an ushering of the brand in a bigger fashion. Currently, its competitors have flooded the mass market which ‘Parker’ consciously avoided. From a branding perspective, Parker has to aggressively magnify its efforts to ward-off competitors than just rely on Big B to do it for them... everytime!

GILLETTE

It has launched products & roped-in a new brand ambassador, but the communication’s been poor!

FromGILLETTE personal care to household products, the dynamic brand Gillette touches lives of millions, everyday. The brand has carved a niche for itself and delivers high quality products to its consumers. According to a Gillette India spokesperson, “Gillette is a globally focused consumer products marketer that seeks competitive advantage in quality, value-added personal care and personal use products.” The brand – grounded in innovation has, over time, come to be associated with strong consumer centric offerings like advanced technology, superior product experience, and strong value proposition… in other words, indeed the best a man can get! Recently, Gillette India signed up the speedster, Irfan Pathan as its brand ambassador to promote its Gillette Vector Plus brand, especially ‘made for India’. Gillette has also been involved with social campaigns like educating children on safe drinking water, contributions to renowned relief agencies like Red Cross, UNICEF, et al. But Gillette, despite its unparalleled advantage with superior products under its umbrella coupled with splendid financials in the recent past to add to its range of low-end product launches to cater to the Indian mass market, has slipped in brand worth by a mighty 20 places to 59 this year. Surely, the brand has to consider better communication techniques and approach to save its brand over time.

STAR NETWORK

IIPM - Admission Procedure

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his Indian ambassadors have taken their job very sincerely!

SinceSTAR NETWORK the dawn of the 21st century, Rupert Murdoch’s Star has outshone other entertainment brands (including the once invincible Zee) in Indian media landscape. The network’s flagship brand Star Plus has reigned the General Entertainment Channel (GEC) category for over six years now, giving requisite push to its other channels viz. Star One, Star Movies, et al. Yet last year, has been a bit shaky for Star Network, with drowning audience interests in its K-serials (soaked in kitchen politics!) and the not-sogreat response to the third season of Kaun Banega Crorepati with SRK. Star also underwent an internal turmoil with exit of Peter Mukherjea and Sameer Nair from the Star Parivar. But, despite all odds, the brand has defended its leadership position with a market share of 41.7% in the GEC category. Yash Khanna of Star India, says: “For STAR Plus, the concentration Has been on category expansion. We will strive to carry this on with other initiatives like Star Voice of India.” Guess there’s no pushing this star off the horizon!

Is the honeymoon over for Indian ad agencies?

Monojit Lahiri checks out this contentious issue...

The Is the honeymoon over for Indian ad agencies?friendly neighbourhood cynic is unstoppable. It’s the return of the East India Company, folks! The multinational juggernaut blitzes ahead, full steam, with most (all?) of our hot-shot shops aligned, associated or in partnership with any one of the global (WPP, Dentsu, Publicis, Interpublic, Omnicom...) giants. In this backdrop, where do the ‘local’ pipsqueaks feature? Further, with globalisation a frightening reality, prompting even some die-hards, traditional, conservative sarkari PSUs to hit the ‘firang’ button, is it the beginning of the end for the desi players? Is it time for them to quickly pull back, see the big picture and reinvent themselves to this new-age environment with a work ethic designed to deliver real, palpable, tangible value... transition from a 24x7 glorified supplier mode to a s o l i d , professionally- driven, service provider of result-oriented communication solution? Hey, this is really hot! Let’s see what the ad-frat has to say...

Rajiv Nayyar, CEO of the Delhibased Perfect 10 advertising agency, is unfazed, but a trifle piqued. “I really don’t think it’s fair to label all nonmultinational ad agencies as glorified suppliers! Fact is, we all operate in the service sector, right? Can any single multinational agency, anywhere in the world, touch their hearts and swear they have never ever conceded, givenin or compromised with a tough, rigid and impossible client when crunch time arrived? It is important to remember that advertising is, first and last, a business. Ego, aesthetics, personal belief, vision and everything else, takes a back seat.” Moving to the issue at hand, Nayyar confidently confesses that his agency has never really faced any heat because “We operate in two different spheres. Multinationals (mostly) are comfortable dealing with multinationals, but India is a vast and complex market and there is life beyond multinationals.” While he agrees in principle that these agencies definitely bring a very high level of sophisticated expertise to the table, the point is, most of it is usually not required for the Indian corporates. Besides, many times, this hi-funda mindset acts as a roadblock in probing and understanding real insights that could provide solutions, “As for Indian clients opting for global agencies, mostly, it’s to attain snob value... proudly tell their peers that they are aligned to a hot global name!”

Newfields Advertising’s Managing Director, Raman Gupta, takes the case forward. A second generation adman – the agency was started by his (late) father, fifty years ago – whose organisation deals only with PSUs and government agencies, he reinforces Nayyar’s argument in his own special way. “There was, and continues to exist, a sense of fear within some agencies regarding an imminent and inevitable takeover by the multinational agencies. I think it’s all bullshit!” Gupta goes on to explain the rationale behind his colourfully descriptive adjective. India is neither a small place nor a uniform, one-size-fits-all country. It is a vast and complex terrain where every region and state lives in its very own special universe. The primary task of a professional communicator is firstly to understand this basic premise and then sensitively decode the complex sub-text that defines the psychographics and demographics of this space. You don’t have to be either a PC Sarkar or Einstein to figure out that an Indian, rooted and home-grown agency is more likely to crack it than a hi-fi global name. Why? “Because without fuss or frippery, we get to the essence straightaway and come out with the desired solution.”

Gupta confides that many of his clients (tempted by others), did hire multinational agencies only to kick themselves later. “Their attitude and arrogance really shook them up!” At the end of the day, he believes, both can co-exist harmoniously because the “India” and “Bharat” divide is real and globalization has only re-affirmed it in no uncertain terms. Lloyd Mathias, the affable and dynamic Marketing Director of Motorola is amused, “I think it is a huge misconception on the part of some Indian ad agencies to believe that multinational agencies are out of sync with the Indian reality. Apart from top-of-the-line global perspective, alignment and shared experience of similar forays played out in other countries, relating to the product advertised, they are fully capable of bringing outstanding insights to the table embracing local colours that make a difference.” He speaks with pride and confidence about his agency (Ogilvy’s) campaign for Motorola (the Abhisekh Bachchan TVC) and states that “it is a classic example of global perspective wedded to local roots.”

Cyrus Batliwala, Director, Corporate Comm. of a large multinational, joins the party with all cylinders firing, “Let’s cut out the crap and cut to the chase! Indian agencies neither have the attitude, aptitude, resources (people), infrastructure or dynamism to match their global counterparts. An Ogilvy, Lowe, Bates, JWT, McCann or Saatchi & Saatchi can never be compared to the local agencies because of the solid value-addition they bring to the table. Their entire focus is about delivering value that will make a difference. They bring knowledge, expertise, passion and purpose in a seamless fuse. The Indian agencies (in most cases) continue to live in a time-warp and play their pathetic yes-sir, no-sir games with their unprofessional clients, terrified of rocking the boat in case the account is lost.”

He adds that the funny part is that if you have courage and conviction backed by solid knowledge – the toughest clients anywhere, will always listen to you and respect your perspective.“ In most cases, these guys are not ad practitioners; they are halwais!!” he says and alleges that, for them, advertising is a dhanda, not a vocation, profession or calling that is engaged in marketing creativity to benefit the manufacturer, brand and the customer.

Rahul Jauhari, the Executive Director of Rediffusion DYR, concludes this debate on a saner and a more tranquil note, “It is a question of who does better work and comes up with brighter ideas. An MNC is essentially a bigger setup – more organised and with wider reach. A client who needs a bigger setup will prefer an MNC but the critical differentiator is quality of work.”

Eventually, it’s not so much about value judgement or which kind of agency is going to score more brownie points. It’s really about what each individual agency believes in, stands for and the direction they wish to pursue... After all, India Inc. is full of stories about the rise and rise of the desi entrepreneur, in the face of intense competition from their multinational brethren, right? What say Karsanbhai Patel of Nirma, the Dhoot family of Videocon and a dozen others?

Dude… Here’s My Car!

ARINDAM CHAUDHURI’S 4 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD CHOOSE IIPM...

It’s zippy times ahead for India’s automotive bevy, and with really good reason…

This special feature edition of 4Ps Business & Marketing is one I hold especially dear to my heart (being the automobile aficionado that I am), and so while I’m sure you’ve enjoyed reading our refreshing analysis of the hot wheeling auto brands driving the nation crazy – and quite literally – it’s only appropriate to sneak a glance at the bigger outlook that India’s radiant automotive industry presents in the new millennium.

The slew of cars launched since the beginning of the current year itself simply reiterates a tale that needs scant telling in the new-age socio-economic dynamics of our country: unprecedented levels of consumer purchasing power clubbed with the allure of convenient financing options and reasonable prices, a vibrant economic environment and a mind-boggling smorgasbord of product choices for both individuals and organizations have all translated into the Indian automotive sector’s emergence as among the most swiftly progressive in the manufacturing segment. And on this occasion, the statistics indeed narrate the story: In the passenger vehicle genre, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) estimates the cumulative growth during the period April-February 2007 compared to the corresponding period last year at a formidable 22.91%, while that of passenger cars in the same duration stands at an impressive 24.76%. In fact, the last one month alone saw passenger car makers enjoy a growth figure of a striking 16.36%. Voila… it’s small surprise then (and much to the rue of road infrastructure authorities, I suspect) that the year 2007 is poised to witness the arrival of nearly 20 new cars, including variants, a historic happenstance in its own right!

Meanwhile,...2007 is poised to witness the arrival of nearly 20 new cars, including variants, a historic happenstance... consider the development in the other domains of the industry, and the coup stands complete. Blazing degrees of advancement in the commercial vehicles category, two wheeler and three-wheeler production, combined with a steady augmentation in export capability of both auto components and assembled vehicles have resulted in India becoming internationally the second most significant two-wheeler industry, the fourth biggest commercial vehicle territory and the eleventh hugest passenger car market, with leading US-based consultancy Keystone projecting us to transform into the world’s third largest automobile market by 2030, only trailing China and the United States.

Again, not entirely astonishing, when one views the figures: SIAM deduced aggregate automobile exports to have spiraled by 25.4% during the last fiscal, with total passenger vehicles accounting for 13%, total commercial vehicles at 22.57%, total two wheelers at 20.65%, and three wheelers accruing a whopping 87.16%! We’re no strangers to the Indian auto component manufacturers’ success saga either, which merits special mention. With an inherent cost advantage when it comes to steel and its auxiliaries, and more vitally, the qualitative capability to deliver comprehensive auto part outsourcing solutions encompassing critical components being serviced to the likes of global original equipment manufacturer (OEM) behemoths like Volvo, Ford, Renault, DaimlerChrysler, Fiat, General Motors to name a few. The Indian auto component industry, currently worth $15 billion is predicted to almost triple at a whopping $40 billion by 2016, as per the Auto Component Manufacturers’ Association (ACMA). More power to Bharat Forge, Wheels India, Sundaram Fasteners, AK Minda, Amtek Auto and the others spearheading this gigantic revolution…

Clearly, the Indian automotive industry is geared for greater glory. Poised to play the role of an even larger determinant of the country’s economic productivity, the promise it harbours in a wider perspective is remarkable; that of creating nearly 25 million jobs in the next decade as anticipated by the Government in its ambitious Automotive Mission Plan 2016. The horizontal and vertical industry connections the very nature of this sector endows it with, makes it a pivotal multiplier of wealth across the spectrum of manufacturing, service & technology, and consequently a perennial focus arena for progress. So, even as car lovers and producers might presently feel the pinch of hiked interest rates, there’s no denying the fact that the wheels are all set to spin into an overdrive like never before!

Who’z discovery is IT?

Discover is Pulsar’s poor cousin. Not anymore!

The Discover is Pulsar’s poor cousin. Not anymore!Bajaj Discover 125 was launched under its predecessor – Pulsar’s shadow... only making enough room for flares of doubts to rise high. But three years have gone past since its launch, and going by the terrific performance (on roads and in showrooms) its sceptics can just start... well, doubting their own doubts! Launched primarily to cater to the executive segment, a slice infested by many 100cc bestsellers and the supposedly 150cc mega-machines; Bajaj’s Discover 125 can be said to have played a crucial role in carving a whole-new segment for itself. With the bike’s 4-stroke heart buzzing ferociously, Bajaj has been instrumental in setting higher standards. “The Discover 125 DTS-i is a technologically differentiated product compared to all other 125cc bikes. Thanks to our DTS-i technology, it offers superior power and fuel efficiency as compared to all other bikes in the 125cc segment. The customer is aware of this advantage,” told a confident Amit Nandi, GMMarketing, Bajaj Auto Ltd.

Getting Discover to capture more imaginations, a strategy was devised to push it into the volume driven 100cc segment. And thus emerged the Discover 110cc, a prototype of big brother 125! The Discover 110 made a dent (within the 100cc segment) that could not be ignored easily. ‘Why, you may ask? A distinguished ride quality and styling that impresses the eye, the Discover 110 scores a perfect 10 when it comes to buying a bike that’s light on fuel but heavy on style. And the tag of ‘Pulsar’s poor cousin’ has just blown away with the wind.

Swift & Stylish...

Why Study Abroad When IIPM Gives You 3 global Advantages!

Yet another wonder from the Maruti stable

Like Akarsh Anand, Chief Manager, Central Zone, ICICI on Maruti Swiftall truly rational consumers looking for a new car, I began my search based on a few criteria. My future car needed to fall within my budget, its maintenance cost should be less, its mileage should be high, it should have style, it should have great after sales service throughout the country (as my work demands travel), it should be envied by my friends and family, its second hand value should be high, and it should be a car that would remain in the market for years to come. Thus, with the list I began my search.

Frankly, I was a little surprised when my decision to purchase the Maruti Swift came easy and a decision which I feel proud of everyday. Out from the Maruti stable, the Swift has one quality which none of its predecessors from Maruti has – it has style! Secondly, apart from its look, the Swift is very powerful. The car simply glides on the road and with its power steering, its easy to maneuver even on the crowded Delhi roads. The A/C is strong and insulation of the car is good, so less noise permeates inside. Its spare parts are cheap and to add to this, I have had my car for over a year now and have never visited the workshop for any mechanical problems apart from the free servicing offered by Maruti. Lastly, the rumours on the poor mileage of Swift are exaggerated and my car with the A/C on gives me a mileage of 12-13 kmpl.

For the critics, there are one or two improvements which Maruti could address is the rear bumper which is a little high and there is a small blind spot on the driver’s extreme right. For me personally, the Swift is a great car with loads of style & power...
